Let’s move! Empowering your choir | A CAPE'lla Classes - 31.01.2026

As part of the A CAPE'lla festival, which takes place every two years, INECC will once again offer a full day of exciting workshops and high-level masterclasses in the field of vocal art in 2026.

In this workshop, Stephan Lutermann shows how movement can deepen the emotional and physical expressiveness of choirs and how this can create lively and inspiring concert moments. Participants gain new insights into the connection between voice, body, and emotions and discover how choral musical performances gain presence and expressiveness through conscious movement.

The workshop focuses on three areas:

1. Using emotions

Stephan Lutermann explains how emotional expressiveness can reinforce the message of a musical performance. The aim is to highlight the intrinsic content of a work more clearly, authentically, and effectively.

2. Strengthening physical presence

Using practical exercises, he shows how to improve posture, mobility, and stage presence. Participants discover how targeted physical work can significantly improve a choir's stage impact.

3. Reinterpreting choral music

The workshop opens up new perspectives on familiar works through movement. Participants learn how choreographic impulses can broaden musical expression without detracting from the sound.

The workshop is aimed at choir directors and committed choir members who are curious to discover new ideas and want to experience how conscious movements can develop the artistic potential of a choir.

Stephan Lutermann

Stephan Lutermann was born in Osnabrück, Germany. He studied organ, church music, and choral conducting at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and at the Cologne University of Music and Dance.

A highly sought-after soloist, Lutermann performs regularly as an organist and pianist at major festivals and concert series throughout Europe, North and South America, and Africa. As a chamber music partner, he further expands his repertoire and professional scope.

Numerous CD recordings (cpo, ambiente, among others), as well as radio and television productions, reflect the breadth of his repertoire and his intensive engagement with questions of historically informed performance practice.

As a conductor, Lutermann captivates audiences with his various choirs on stages both in Germany and abroad. Awards at international competitions testify to the high quality of his choral work. Invitations as a lecturer and jury member round out his professional activities.

In 2010, Lutermann initiated the 1st European Children’s and Youth Choir Meeting “Sing We And Chant It.” The accompanying symposium on the topic “Trends and Developments of the Children’s Voice” promoted choral work with young singers. His commitment to fostering the next generation also includes cooperative projects with the Goethe-Institut in Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Lutermann worked as a church musician at St. Matthew’s Church in Melle, where he performed concerts centered around the historic Klausing organ from 1713, restored by Hendrik Ahrend. During his time in Melle, he appeared there as a conductor, organist, and pianist in more than 200 concerts.

From 2022 to 2024, Lutermann served as a visiting professor of choral conducting at the Hamburg University of Music and Dance.

As founder and director of the multi-award-winning chamber choir “Vokalconsort Osnabrück,” he has developed new concert formats and has inspired audiences internationally through his innovative programs.

In recent years, Lutermann has worked intensively with choreographer Lars Scheibner on the scenic realization of choral works. In particular, the productions of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion and Johannes Brahms’s A German Requiem have received widespread acclaim and enthusiasm. The founding of the European elite ensemble CHOREOS in 2016 represents the logical continuation of this innovative work. It is the world’s first ensemble of its kind. With performances, for example, at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the ensemble has caused a sensation in recent years.

The work with CHOREOS has gained significant international recognition. Workshops and seminars, among others in Tallinn (ECA Conference), Sweden (Föreningen Sveriges Körledare), Serbia (From Choir in Movement to Choral Theatre), Denmark (Aarhus Vocal Festival), and Germany focusing on the “CHOREOS Method,” demonstrate the strong interest of the professional community in this work.

Since 2025, Stephan Lutermann has been Director of the Academy of Music and International Masterclasses Forum Artium and Artistic Director of the Musica Viva Festival.
